The UWC Spanish Committee Foundation decided in 2006 to commission a Feasibility Plan to study the prospects of establishing a United World College in Spain with a holistic focus on the Mediterranean basin, especially on North Africa.

At the end of 2007, the formal decision of the Spanish Committee was presented to the UWC International Office for the first time.

In 2008, after a selection process that entailed several phases, Comillas was selected as the final location for the intended UWC España. The winning proposal combined:

  • The assignment of an ideal location for the placement of a UWC.
  • The availability of an infrastructure already built and adaptable to the specific needs of the UWC España.
  • Important institutional support.
  • The adequacy of the institutions involved with the values and mission of UWC.
  • Very strong financial commitment.

After presenting these primary plans that laid the basic groundwork to the International Office, an official “Initial Notification” was granted to the project.

Owing to the progress attained by  the project for the creation of the UWC España in terms of budgeting, designing, networking and fundraising at the macro level but also regarding specific micro-initiatives, the “Preliminary Approval” has been granted in March 2010. The “Final Approval” should be granted at least one year before the opening of this College in order to be able to offer places to UWC national committees. Therefore, the UWC Spanish Committee Foundation will continue to work as thoroughly and enthusiastically as it has done until now in order to make reality the goal of a “Final Approval” for 2012.
